The Best Romantic Movies that are Serious

The English Patient - This is a modern classic and winner of nine Academy Awards. Hana, a nurse (Juliette Binoche), tends to wounded archaeologist, Laszlo (Ralph Fiennes) who has been injured in a plane crash. As she nurses him, he flashes back to his deep love for a married woman (Kristin Scott Thomas). Get your tissues ready!

House of Flying Daggers - The story of Mei, the blind member of a group of rebels, and Jin, an undercover police officer who is under orders to destroy the rebel group. Their journey through the Chinese countryside is both beautiful and eventful with amazing fight scenes and breathtaking scenery. Chinese with English subtitles.

Love Story – A classic tearjerker, this is one of the best romantic movies ever. It tells the tale of Jenny (Ali McGraw), a poor college student and Oliver (Ryan O'Neal), a rich law student who fall in love while attending college, get married and live happily…until tragedy strikes. This timeless film featured the famous quote "Love means never having to say you're sorry."

Stardust - A fairytale adventure starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Clare Danes and Robert De Niro. A young man, on a quest to win the affections of the woman he loves, encounters action and adventure along the way.

The Notebook - Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks The Notebook tells the heart-rending story of a poor boy who meets and falls in love with a rich girl.

Moulin Rouge! - Nicole Kidman and Ewan Mcgregor star in this dazzling musical about passion, energy and the freedom to love.

The Last of the Mohicans - Cora (Madeleine Stowe) and her younger sister, Alice (Jodhi May), both recent arrivals to the colonies are ambushed by a Huron war party. Saved from death by Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis), the two sisters face an epic journey to safety. As Cora and Hawkeye fall in love they must survive wilderness, war and vengeful Huron warriors.

Tristan and Isolde - A medieval love story that stars James Franco as a prince who falls in love with the daughter of a rival king…leading to tragic results. This is the modern remake of a classic love story.

Ghost - The Academy Award winning movie that features the most romantic scene of all time and is considered one of the best romantic movies. It's the story of a couple so in love that even death cannot part them, this is an exciting, thrilling, and deeply moving film featuring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze, and Whoopi Goldberg.

William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet - Shakespeare's immortal tale of two star-crossed young lovers is the theme of many of the best romantic movies. This version is updated to modern day Florida and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes as the doomed teenage children of rival industrialists.
