Love Poems To Inspire You

Love poems eloquently express the feelings and thoughts that most of us have had about love at some point in our lives.

The skill of the poets is that they're able to put these emotions into words.

And not only are they beautiful to read...

...writing a poem out and giving it to your loved one is a very moving gift for him or her.

You can personalize the poem by inserting their name into it.

Or you could use a poem as part of a romantic love letter.

Maybe you'll be inspired to write your own poem. Honestly, it's not as hard as it might sound!

Read our guide on how to write romantic poems if you need convincing!

We've split the poems that we've chosen into six categories so that you can find just the right poem for the right occasion...

Sad Love Poetry - When love becomes painful

Funny Love Poetry – A humorous take on love and romance

Short Love Poetry – Short and sweet poems that say it all in a few words

Romantic Poems – These will make your heart soar with love.

Broken Heart Poetry - Heartbreak and unhappiness in love.

- Sweet Love Poetry - The cute side of love. We've chosen a selection for to enjoy as written out below:

Sweet Love Poetry

One Girl – Sappho (7th Century)

Like the sweet apple which reddens upon the topmost bough,
Atop on the topmost twig, - which the pluckers forgot, somehow, -
Forget it not, nay but got it not, for none
Could get it till now.

Like the wild hyacinth flower which on the hills is found,
Which the passing feet of the shepherds for ever tear and wound,
Until the purple blossom is trodden in the ground.

I Loved You -Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837)

I loved you; even now I may confess,
Some embers of my love their fire retain;
But do not let it cause you more distress,
I do not want to sadden you again.
Hopeless and tongue-tied, yet I loved you dearly
With pangs the jealous and timid know;
So tenderly I loved you, so sincerely,
I pray God grant another love you so.

Music - Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory –
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.
Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thy art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

These are just a few examples of love poems…there are so many out there to choose from! The more modern poems are subject to copyright so we can't reproduce them here. Books like The New Faber Book of Love Poems by James Fenton, A Book of Love Poetry by Jon Stallworthy and Love Poems (Everyman's Library Pocket Poets) by Peter Washington are all worth reading if you want more inspiration.
