Romantic Love Poems To Romance Your Partner

Poets have been writing romantic love poems for thousands of years, from every culture in the world.

Below are five examples of romantic love poems. Each of them is timeless in its' expressions of love and romance.

And all of them would be a great romantic idea for your loved one – copy them out and give them as a gift for your partner. Even better, insert their name into the poem to personalise it.

Or why not try writing your own romantic poem? We show you how easy it really is to write romantic love poems!

Excerpt from Dr Faustus – Christopher Marlowe (circa 1600)

Was this the face that launched a thousand ships,
And burnt the topless towers of Ilium?
Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss!
Her lips suck forth my soul: see, where it flies!

Who would sell me one beautiful thought
for a hundred pounds of gold? Who
would exchange one minute of love
for a handful of gems?
Who would give me one eye
that can see beauty,
in exchange for all my treasures?

She Walks in Beauty – Lord Byron (1788-1824)

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

To my dear and loving husband – Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672)

If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were loved by wife, then thee.
If ever wife was happy in a man
Compare with me, ye woman, if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the east dost hold.
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee give recompence.
Thy love is such I can no way repay;
The heavens reward thee manifold I pray.
Then while we live, in love let's so persevere,
That when we live no more we may live ever.

Sudden Light – Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)

I have been here before,
But when I cannot tell:
I know the grass beyond the door,
The sweet keen smell,
The sighing sound, the lights around the shore.

You have been mine before, -
How long ago I may not know:
But just when at that swallow's soar
Your neck turned so,
Some veil did fall, - I knew it all of yore.

Then, now, - perchance again! …
O round mine eyes your tresses shake!
Shall we not lie as we have lain
Thus for Love's sake,
And sleep, and wake, yet never break the chain?

Sonnet 18 - William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometimes too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair some time declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long loves this, and this gives life to thee.
