- Why are you writing the poem? - What are the special qualities that you like about your partner? - What are your feelings about him or her? - What are the positive effects that they have had on your life? - What do you want with him or her in the future? Just let your thoughts come flowing out at his stage. The more you think now, the easier it'll be to write your romantic poems. Get Writing Okay, so we're onto the good bit now…the actual writing of your romantic poems! Before you start, it's really important to remember the following points: - Once you've made notes, just start writing your poem. Write down whatever comes into your brain without analysing it too much. Some of it might not be that great, some of it might be amazing! The important thing is that you're writing. You can edit and change things as much as you like. - A romantic poem can be very short. It really doesn't have to go on and on! Sometimes it's much easier for someone to absorb a few lines of poetry than pages and pages of it. - You can use simple, ordinary words that you would normally use. That's what most modern poets do. Very few of them use fancy or flowery vocabulary. It's how you say it that's important. And unless that's how you normally speak it's going to look like you've just copied your poem from someone else! If your brain gets stuck for words an

if you need help with specifically romantic words. - Write your romantic poems from the heart, not from the intellectual side of your brain. This should be all about your feelings coming through. - Your romantic poems really don't have to rhyme. Some of the best poets never write rhyming poems. It can be much easier to let your emotions flow through without having to think of a rhyme for a particular word. Sometimes it'll happen naturally but don't feel that you have to force it. And if you find rhyming easy…well, that's great too! - If you get stuck don't be disheartened. Writer's block is very common even for professionals. Just take a break (anything from a few minutes to a few weeks!) and start again when you're feeling fresh and calm. - Keep reading your romantic poems out as you're writing them to hear if they flow well and sound right. - And be positive. You really can do it! We've got an example to help you. We've taken the letter we wrote in the
guide to writing love letters
and transformed it into a poem to show you how easy it can be to write romantic poems. So this is the letter… Dear Adam When I woke up this morning, it made me smile to see you lying next to me. You looked so peaceful as you slept that I just had to reach over and kiss your face gently. Maybe you felt the touch of my mouth as you were dreaming. And then it made me think of all the times I've fallen asleep next to you and all the times you've been here when I've woken up. And how you are always here by my side – you've comforted me through the difficult times, you've listened to me patiently when things have been too much for me. And you've laughed with me. Even your eyes seem to sparkle when we laugh together. Adam, you are my constant in an inconstant world. You make me feel safe and loved. And knowing that you are next to me has made me feel that I can step out into the world and enjoy experiencing new things. I can't wait to wake up next to you tomorrow, my angel, and kiss you gently again. Love Eve xx And, voila, this is the romantic poem… My Sleeping Angel When I watch you sleeping it makes me smile To see you dream so peacefully. And so I kiss you - a gentle kiss upon your lips. Maybe you feel the touch of my mouth As you lie dreaming. And then I think of all the times That you've been here when I wake up. And how you're always here for me… In troubled moments and blissful days. You are my constant in an inconstant world. You make me feel safe, you make me feel loved. And knowing you're here, I feel that I'm held. And so I'll kiss you every day, my angel, Before I step into the world. Basically, all we've done is to split up the sentences and rearrange the words a little to make the words flow in a more poetic way. That really all there is to it – your partner won't expect a literary masterpiece! Give it a title and you're onto the final stage…. Present Your Love Poem You can present your love poem in a number of ways: - Write your love poem down on a piece of paper. Either type it or write it neatly out on special paper and present it as a gift. - Recite your love poem to your loved one. Either memorise it or, even easier, read it out. This would work really well as part of a
romantic date.
So now you know how to write romantic poems, go out and dazzle your partner (and yourself) with your skills!
